There are a lot of reasons to love cement tile. Whether you’re entranced by the mesmerizing patterns, in love with the vibrant, organic pigments, or you just enjoy having artisan-crafted materials around your home, cement tile is a great choice for many different spaces.

Cement Tile and What It Can Do in Your Home

As interested as cement tile might look on paper, some of you may be wondering what these exciting patterns look like in practical settings. Decor that you enjoy in theory often looks different in the context of your home, but fortunately, we’ve got plenty of customers who have proven time and time again that handmade cement tile lives up to all expectations.

Though our cement tile looks fabulous in any of the places you’d expect to see tile, as you can see, it also shines in those less common spots around the home. These stairs are the perfect example of what cement tile brings to the table, even when used in small doses.

The use of cement tile on stairs is still fairly novel, even within the interior design community, though this trend seems to be growing in popularity. Stairs provide a unique opportunity to contrast the designs of multiple different tiles without ever seeming mismatched or gaudy. This designer largely stuck to a simple but effective black-and-white (though some tiny hints of grey can be seen in the Erizo Black tiles!), ensuring that even though the patterns are different, they aren’t working against each other. These stairs make use of Erizo Black, Zanzibar Black, Nola White, and El Fenn Black to great effect, matching up with the room’s simple color scheme brilliantly.

Of course, black and white tile isn’t just constrained to being used in a matching color scheme. In fact, its simplicity lends a great deal of room for interpretation when it comes to choosing contrasting colors. Take a look at this bathroom, for example:

This bathroom practically defines ‘tasteful’ to us, making use of our ode to art deco, Havana Black. Directly inspired by the tiles of Cuba and Miami, Havana Black has long been one of our favorites and a definite crowd-pleaser. This classic tile has been used to bring a dose of tradition to more modern spaces and elevate traditional spaces with handcrafted beauty. This bathroom is no exception.

With its dark blue cabinets, floating shelves, a unique mirror, and bold lighting fixtures, this space is clearly focused on modern and exciting design. The Havana Black cement tile provides this lively bathroom with texture, using its intricate pattern to contrast the solid colors of the rest of the room. As an added note, we absolutely adore the matching shower nook. It’s a great way of breaking up the bright white of the shower tiles.

While both of these applications are remarkably bold, cement tile is every bit as useful for more understated purposes. Because of their striking patterns and often lively colors, many people don’t think that cement tiles are suitable in spaces that feature delicate colors and decor, as cement tile would seem to overwhelm such a space. While this may be true of some varieties of cement tile, there are others that are outstanding choices for situations like this, such as Nola Pink:

Aside from the tile backsplash, this small bathroom is focused primarily on white and off-white, with a few specks of bronze thrown in. Especially when you consider the natural pattern present in the marble countertop, this could seem like an odd place for the mesmerizing patterns of cement tile, but as you can see, our Nola Pink works beautifully.

This designer clearly has a keen eye for color, choosing a shade of pink that’s just bright enough to fit in while being colorful enough to be clearly identifiable in this bright space. The delicate lines present in Nola Pink add a note of contrast that serves to fully unite the backsplash with the rest of the decor. Ultimately, this designer used our pink tile to create a new and exciting spin on the classic pink-and-white color scheme seen in many bathrooms.

We always love seeing people explore the possibilities present in our tile, and Nola offers no shortage of possibilities. This style of tile is among a few of our selections that can be oriented in different ways to produce different patterns. Seeing a new Nola installation is always exciting for us, because our customers have produced so many fascinating uses for it.

This application of Nola White in a massive kitchen backsplash is nothing if not bold. With both dark appliances and cabinets, this space was perfectly set up for a bright and vivid backsplash, and Nola White proved to be more than up to the task. While featuring a bright white background, this tile’s dark linework is an ideal match for the darker features present in this room. What’s more, Nola White also acts as a middle-ground between the white top cabinets and the dark lower cabinets. All around, this space’s prominent use of contrasting colors and exciting patterns makes it a memorable and singular space.
