A contemporary color palette often comprises shades of whites, creams, and occasional greys. We tend to conflate contemporary with clean and clean with austere, unadorned style. But “contemporary” just means “of the moment,” and the moment is changing.  Jewel tones have been in the spotlight lately, and we’re supportive of any design that doesn’t shy away from bold colors. Jewel tones emulate the colors of precious gemstones such as emeralds, rubies, amethyst, sapphires, and more. Below are some of our favorite examples of designs that incorporate jewel tones into their looks.

#1: Shades of Green

One unmistakable jewel tone is emerald green. We know green isn’t for everyone, but when done well, nothing compares to a royal, verdant vibe. We have a selection of green tile choices in varying shades, the most pertinent being our Emerald Green Zellige, which comes in 2x6 and 4x4 sizes. We love this color and all of its surprising versatility. Whether displayed in swathes or small-scale, it is sure to wow.

If you’re looking for a similar shade that’s a bit more muted, our Forest Green Zellige, also available in 2”x6” and 4”x4” tiles, is the perfect fit.

Green looks good in any form, including a more matte style via our cement tiles. Whether patterned or solid, these shades of green are also a fun and classy alternative to our glossy Zellige.

#2: Blue Velvet

Another color that has depth and endless possibilities is sapphire blue. With undertones of violet and rich intensity, this color is royalty incarnate. You can pair it with white for a more minimal feel or build off its character with different luxurious tones.

#3: Accessories and Accents

Finally, if jewel-toned tiles aren’t what you envision, and you’d rather have a lighter or more neutral backdrop with jewel-toned accents, you can always opt for other tiles of ours while adding different tones to the mix. Here are some examples.
