Zellige tiles are a timeless option—and for good reason! These handcrafted tiles use natural clay from Fez, Morocco that's harvested and fired at a low temperature. The tile is then glazed using an ancient process before it's fired again. The second firing round often causes crazing, when the glaze breaks slightly to show several small cracks. Zellige tiles are often pitted underneath the glaze; many have tiny cracks and chipped edges, adding to the traditional Zellige finish. The tiles are also hand-chiseled and may come in slightly different sizes. So, if you're looking for a more seamless look from Zellige tile, order 20-30% more product than you think you'll need. This way, you can avoid slight imperfections and color and size variations between tiles. Because Zellige tiles are often slightly different, they are interesting to look at in any application, including in commercial spaces, where they are perfect for interior and exterior flooring and walls.
Bar Tile
This bar inside Gypsy Kitchen in Washington, D.C. is the ideal location for the varied Zellige tiles. The tiles' pattern matches the exposed brick on the wall behind the bar. The 4-inch square sea green Zellige tiles' color is aquatic enough to give the space hints of a seascape. It's also balanced with neutral brick and wood, so it doesn't overwhelm the space.View this post on Instagram
Hair Salon Tile
There is perhaps nothing more glamorous than a tile wall in a salon. The four-by-four-inch emerald green Zellige tile immediately elevates the dying, washing and clipping experience. Emerald green Zellige tile is darker than the sea green color, providing more of a chic feel. It's easy to see how it informed the style of the rest of Boston's She Is Sofie James salon. Copper and Ivory designed the salon, where the entire interior has an edgy-yet-girly vibe that includes a spattering of pink neon signs with fun sayings.View this post on Instagram
Nine Zero One salon in Los Angeles—where Selena Gomez, Hilary Duff and Miley Cyrus have gotten their hair done—is clean and modern. Instead of adding dramatic color, this salon opted for four-inch blush Zellige tile as a backsplash to the salon hair washing station. The light pink tile looks elegant against pale wood shelving and the black leather chairs and sinks.View this post on Instagram
Spa Tile
Alexa, the owner of Lex Esthetics, wanted both Japanese and Scandinavian designs in her spa. Designer Jana Roach incorporated black two-by-six-inch Zellige tiles into the front desk. Next to light wood paneled walls and a light wood floor, this black Zellige tile gives the spa a polished-but-moody look.View this post on Instagram
Though not exactly a spa, this Airbnb shower brings the same feeling as a luxurious and relaxing getaway. Covered in four-inch square emerald green Zellige tile with a rain-head shower head, this bathroom might as well be a spa. If you're looking to stay in a home that feels like a cabin but has the luxury that comes with a day of pampering yourself, look no further than the Millbrook Farmhouse in the Great Northern Catskills.View this post on Instagram
