Moroccan zellige offers something that can be very difficult to find even in the diverse cornucopia of today’s interior design market: authenticity.

Out of all the tiles in our collection, few exhibit the pure, simplistic grace offered in spades by our Moroccan zellige tile. From unique pigments to delicate imperfections, this stunning variety of tile offers something that can be very difficult to find even in the diverse cornucopia of today’s interior design market: authenticity. This rustic terracotta tile is sourced directly from traditional craftsmen in Morocco, who have completely perfected their art over generations. While some tiles may have roots in centuries-old designs and construction methods, Moroccan zellige is crafted the same way it has been for centuries. It’s not a modernization of some classic tile, it’s the real deal, which is a major reason we’re so drawn to this tile.  But it’s not just the authenticity of Moroccan zellige that people are finding so appealing. It’s the impressive versatility, the singular look, and the variety of options that makes these tiles such an excellent choice for many interior design styles. From vivacious greens to soft blues to delicate shades of white, we offer a variety of zellige tile for just about every space.

Moroccan Zellige, Up Close and Personal

While a lot of people have seen zellige in images of new applications, many more haven’t seen zellige up close. While broad shots of a new zellige application are great for showing how this tile interacts with the whole room, they often miss out on some of the fine-point details that make real Moroccan zellige so great. Take this close-up of our 2x6 Emerald Green zellige for example:

As this post from one of our customers makes abundantly clear, Emerald Green doesn’t just mean emerald green. Zellige is becoming so popular thanks in no small part to the natural variations created by the ancient methods of construction. This gorgeous green zellige bathroom floor varies from brighter seafoam to emerald to rich forest greens, creating a fascinating tapestry of color that is wholly unique to this space. Every order of zellige is slightly different, meaning that no 2 applications will ever be exactly the same. Additionally, the variations in color, as you can see here, are often quite subtle, ensuring that your order won’t surprise you by being lighter or darker than planned.  As for this variety of zellige tile specifically, we absolutely love the way that the brighter greens interact with the darker, as the two together almost create a sense of glittering color, bringing new meaning to the phrase “emerald green”. When the light catches our Emerald Green Moroccan zellige just the right way, you can also see that each tile has a distinct glaze brought on by the kiln-firing they undergo during creation, with some approaching a flat matte finish, others simply shining in the light, while others still glimmer with a hypnotizing opalescence. Emerald Green is among our more vibrant zellige offerings, and we’re always excited to see it gracing another home.  Moving away from the cool color of Emerald Green, we have the ruddy and rustic Blush, seen here in 2x6:

Blush is the perfect example of a piece of decor that almost seems to change based on its surroundings. In a room with a lot of bright white, the red-pink hues present Blush will be more apparent, whereas in darker rooms, the earthy, nearly-tan hues exhibited by Blush might be more obvious, giving this zellige tile more of a red brick color than a rosy-pink color. In this close-up, you can see both of these concepts in action to some extent. The Blush in the center-left is in a shadow, revealing the darker complexity possible with this type of zellige, where on the right under this bathroom's bright lighting, you can see the vibrant playfulness Blush is capable of.  In these posts, you can see just how multifaceted Moroccan zellige can be. Because of its glazed finish and range of colors, the space around zellige is nearly as important in determining what an application looks like as the tile itself, giving this classic style of tile a versatility that can be hard to find in statement pieces as bold as they are.

Simple White Zellige Tile

As exciting as the bolder colors are, many of you may be looking for something a bit more understated for your home. For those of you looking for something more neutral, white zellige tile has proven to be an ideal neutral material, while also providing your space with a few added benefits.  Unlike plain white ceramic tiles, white zellige tiles also exhibit some variations in color and texture, keeping any application from looking overly uniform. Whether it’s the added subtle greys or the delicate hairline fissures and chips, our white zellige is sure to bring a little something extra to those spaces where neutral colors are the focus.

This dual-vanity bathroom makes use of our ever-popular 4x4 Snow zellige tile juxtaposed with our Black terrazzo tile on the floor. Though this bathroom has a fairly simple black-white-walnut color scheme, you’d never consider it overly simple because the materials this designer used to achieve this color scheme are so utterly unique and textured.  But you don’t need multiple tiles contrasting one another to build something that you’ll love. This breakfast nook proves just that.
