We most often see tile on bathroom floors and kitchen backsplashes in a home. But some of our favorite ways to use tile are in outside spaces, too! From patios to pools, outdoor tile makes a statement in any backyard.
Zellige tile is a perfect, durable option for the outdoors. The hand-crafted Moroccan tiles vary in color, size, and quality – they sometimes have small pits and chipped edges — but Zellige's distinctive appearance makes it an eye-catching choice in outside spaces.
Both cement and ceramic tile also look fantastic outdoors. Artisans hand-make Riad's encaustic cement tiles by heating them to seal in the pigment and make them durable for a wide array of outside uses.
Bar
If you want to add an outside space for social gatherings at your house, consider investing in an outdoor bar or kitchen. For example, unglazed, natural, terracotta 2"x6" Zellige tiles cover a picturesque rooftop bar at Adrienne's NYC, a new Italian restaurant in New York City.View this post on Instagram
The southern Italian restaurant with a waterfront deck is perfectly decorated with the bar's terracotta alcoves and light blue-and-white, striped canopy. Glossy white bar stools and a matching countertop brighten up the bar even more.
Planters
Interior design studio Hommeboys accented this stone patio with some serious outdoor tile accessories. Four" Snow White Zellige square tiles decorate the custom-made planters, overflowing with greenery.View this post on Instagram
Meanwhile, 2"x6" Sea Green Zellige tiles wrap around a firepit. The same striking color is found in the geometrically patterned pillows on a swinging couch suspended by ropes. Low-sitting tan chairs and rustic hanging lights make this corner of the yard look that much more comfortable.
Pool
If you're lucky enough to have an in-ground pool during the hot summer months, why not cover it in tile that looks like the color of the Mediterranean Sea when sunlight hits it? This vibrant outdoor tile — which appears even more luxurious next to the black-and-white striped patio furniture and a matching fringe umbrella — is part of a pool and patio Haus of Meeshie designed.View this post on Instagram
The rich color of the 4" Square Emerald Green Zellige tiles pairs well with the giant green cactus, plus other potted plants and lush landscaping by Studio John Sharp.

If you have a luxurious pool in the backyard, you might also want an outdoor shower. This one by Dani California Interiors design studio features a wall of Estrella Grey Cement tile as a backdrop for a modern black shower head and handle. The gray cement tile matches a stone path and backyard furniture in this relaxing, coastal backyard.
